Height maps and terrain
Grey height maps drive displacement, parallax, terrain and normal maps. Make one from a picture with levels and gamma control, rebuild one from an existing normal map, generate an eroded terrain at the sizes Unity (2ⁿ + 1) and Unreal landscapes expect, or move a heightmap between headerless RAW and 16-bit PNG. Everything is saved in 16-bit by default, so smooth slopes do not turn into steps.
Tools in this group
| Height Map Generator | Make a height map from an image, check it as displaced geometry in 3D, then save a 16-bit PNG. |
|---|---|
| Normal Map to Height Map | Rebuild a grey height map from a normal map when you need displacement or parallax and only have the normals. |
| RAW Heightmap to PNG Converter | Open a headerless .raw or .r16 terrain heightmap as a 16-bit PNG, or convert a PNG back to RAW. |
| Terrain Heightmap Generator | Generate a random terrain heightmap with mountains, valleys and erosion gullies, and download it as 16-bit PNG or RAW. |
